This book examines the role of Hindu-inspired faith movements (HIFMs) in contemporary India as actors in social transformation. It further situates these movements in the context of the global political economy where such movements cross national boundaries to locate believers among the Hindu diaspora and others. In contemporary neoliberal India, HIFMs have become important actors, and they realize themselves by making public assertions through service. The four pillars of the contemporary presence of such movements are: gurus, sociality, hegemony and social transformation. Gurus , who spearhead these movements, create a matrix of possible meanings in their public discourses which their followers pick up to create messages of personal and social change. Sociality is a core strategy of proliferation across such movements and implies social service, which is qualified by memories of the guru and what they are believed to embody. Hegemony is reflected in the fact that social service in such movements often ominously imbibes right-wing or far-right Hinduism. They propose a model of Hindu-inspired social transformation , involving faith building into and transforming the civil society. The book discusses in a nuanced way several Hindu-inspired faith movements of various hues which have made national and international impact. This topical book is of interest to students and researchers in the fields of sociology, anthropology, social work, and social psychology, with a special interest in the study of religious movements.
When two humans come together as lovers, they mirror the divine union - the most sacred act of creation - and connect directly with the energy of all life. Thus the energy of your sexuality is the source of the greatest ´´magic´´ of all, namely the creation of life itself. In The Art of Sexual Magic, you will discover the sacred roots of sexuality not only as an erotic art but as a meditative tradition. For many years author Margot Anand has researched the teachings and advanced practices of sacred sexuality around the world. Through her best-selling book The Art of Sexual Ecstasy, thousands of couples have changed their love lives forever through the practices of tantra. Based on ancient Hindu-Buddhist scriptures, tantra literally means ´´weaving´´. As the threads of life and love cross one another, tantra teaches, they join in cosmic union. Within this absolute connection with the universe, your most profound yearnings become possible. This is sexual magic. Using erotic rituals and specific meditations, tantric lovers can alter their consciousness and channel the energy of orgasm for healing, ecstasy, even enlightenment. Trained at the Sorbonne as a psychologist, Margot Anand combines four powerful elements in this audio learning series: processes for sexual healing; tantra for cosmic union and bliss; clinical sexology for expanding orgasm; and magic visioning to manifest transformation. Safely, creatively, you learn to explore other dimensions of your sex life and gain new ways to bridge sexual union with a greater source of wisdom and clarity. With its wealth of rituals and visualizations developed specifically for Western students and lovers, The Art of Sexual Magic is a life-changing work that is sure to enliven your intimate hours. 1. The Selector of Souls begins with a scene that is terrifying, harrowing and yet strangely tender: we´re in the mid ranges of the Himalayas as a young woman gives birth to her third child with the help of her mother, Damini. The birth brings no joy, just a horrible accounting, and the act that follows - the huge sacrifice made by Damini out of love of her daughter - haunts the novel. In Shauna Singh Baldwin´s enthralling novel, two fascinating, strong-willed women must deal with the relentless logic forced upon them by survival: Damini, a Hindu midwife, and Anu, who flees an abusive marriage for the sanctuary of the Catholic church. When Sister Anu comes to Damini´s home village to open a clinic, their paths cross, and each are certain they are doing what´s best for women. What do health, justice, education and equality mean for women when India is marching toward prosperity, growth and becoming a nuclear power? If the baby girls and women around them are to survive, Damini and Anu must find creative ways to break with tradition and help this community change from within. 1. Language: English. Harry Flashman - the unrepentant bully of Tom Brown’s schooldays, now with a Victoria Cross - has three main talents: horsemanship, facility with foreign languages, and fornication. A reluctant military hero, Flashman plays a key part in most of the defining military campaigns of the 19th century, despite trying his utmost to escape them all. Expelled from Rugby for drunkenness, and none too welcome at home after seducing his father’s mistress, the young Flashman embarks on a military career with Lord Cardigan’s Hussars. En route to Afghanistan, our hero hones his skills as a soldier, duellist, imposter, coward, and amorist (mastering all 97 ways of Hindu love-making during a brief sojourn in Calcutta), before being pressed into reluctant service as a secret agent. His Afghan adventures culminate in a starring role in that great historic disaster, the Retreat from Kabul. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Rupert Penry-Jones.
