Listen to this second edition! Hinduism originated in India, the land of diverse ethnicity and culture, and is the oldest known religion in the world, with its history reportedly dating back as far as 6500 BCE. Amidst the diversity, Hindus try to promote peace and universality of shared beliefs. Diversity and communal unity, irrespective of faith, also apply to their religious practices. As Hinduism has spread its wings, various versions of the religion sprang from different groups around the world. Because Hinduism is so broad and complex, this book has been specifically designed to present you with an easy-to-understand overview of this incredible religion. Throughout the following chapters, I´m going to outline the common beliefs, rituals, holidays, and the overarching concepts that you may wish to apply to your own life, should you choose to follow Hinduism. Mindfulness and yoga are widely said to improve mental and physical health, and booming industries have emerged to teach them as secular techniques. This movement is typically traced to the 1970s, but in reality it began a century earlier. Mind Cure traces the process by which practices like meditation, mindfulness, and yoga moved from the religious fringes of American culture to the medical and psychological mainstream, revealing previously overlooked confluences of Buddhist, Hindu, medical, African American, and women´s history in America.
2011 Reprint of 1948 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. The main character of this classic novel, Emil Sinclair, is a young boy raised in a bourgeois home, amidst what is described as a Scheinwelt, a play on words that means ´´world of light´´ as well as ´´world of illusion´´. Emil´s entire existence can be summarized as a struggle between two worlds: the show world of illusion (related to the Hindu concept of maya) and the real world, the world of spiritual truth. In the course of the novel, accompanied and prompted by his mysterious classmate ´Max Demian´, he detaches from and revolts against the superficial ideals of the world of appearances and eventually awakens into a realization of self. The novel refers to the idea of Gnosticism, particularly the god Abraxas, showing the influence of Carl Jung´s psychology. According to Hesse, the novel is a story of Jungian individuation, the process of opening up to one´s unconsciousness.
Global climate change and global refugee crises will soon become inextricably interlinked. A new tsunami of climate refugees flows across the Earth. We are now at the moment of truth. Climate change is with us, and we need to think about the next big disturbing idea - the potentially disastrous consequences of massive numbers of environmental refugees at large on the planet. In 2020, the United Nations projects that we will have 50 million environmental refugees mostly from Africa, Asia, and Latin America. How will people be relocated and settled? Is it possible to offer environmental refugees temporary or permanent asylum? Will these refugees have any collective rights in the new areas they inhabit? And lastly, who will pay the costs of all the affected countries during the process of resettlement? Environmental refugees are a problem beyond the scope of a single country or agency. ´´A must read for policymakers and those in positions of power, especially the ones who remain in a state of denial about climate change and refuse to do enough to address the crisis.´´ (The Hindu) ´´This chilling and urgent call to action spares no detail in its mission to present the facts on a looming humanitarian disaster.´´ (Foreword Reviews) ´´Deals masterfully with a neglected crisis, how climate change is driving migration.´´ (Christopher E. Goldthwait, US ambassador, retired) 1. Language: English. Narrator: Gary Roelofs. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/112196/bk_acx0_112196_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.
Surprisingly, one of the more lucid insights on the philosophy of the Tibetan Book of the Dead comes from a Hindu mystic, named Baba Faqir Chand, who apparently was not familiar with the original Tibetan text or its English translation. Although Faqir was not conversant with the Bardo Thotrol, he was nevertheless steeped in its philosophy as taught to him by his guru, Shiv Brat Lal of Gopiganj. Faqir Chand, like his lama counterparts, spent much of his life in meditation, attempting to consciously go through the dying process in order to prepare himself for his final exit. However, unlike others of his kind, Faqir left a detailed account of his some 70-plus years of meditation (ranging from three to 12 hours daily) which led up to his enlightenment. The result is a richly detailed account which provides a thorough understanding of how inner visions and the like are projected in the intermediate stages between life and death. 1. When two humans come together as lovers, they mirror the divine union - the most sacred act of creation - and connect directly with the energy of all life. Thus the energy of your sexuality is the source of the greatest ´´magic´´ of all, namely the creation of life itself. In The Art of Sexual Magic, you will discover the sacred roots of sexuality not only as an erotic art but as a meditative tradition. For many years author Margot Anand has researched the teachings and advanced practices of sacred sexuality around the world. Through her best-selling book The Art of Sexual Ecstasy, thousands of couples have changed their love lives forever through the practices of tantra. Based on ancient Hindu-Buddhist scriptures, tantra literally means ´´weaving´´. As the threads of life and love cross one another, tantra teaches, they join in cosmic union. Within this absolute connection with the universe, your most profound yearnings become possible. This is sexual magic. Using erotic rituals and specific meditations, tantric lovers can alter their consciousness and channel the energy of orgasm for healing, ecstasy, even enlightenment. Trained at the Sorbonne as a psychologist, Margot Anand combines four powerful elements in this audio learning series: processes for sexual healing; tantra for cosmic union and bliss; clinical sexology for expanding orgasm; and magic visioning to manifest transformation. Safely, creatively, you learn to explore other dimensions of your sex life and gain new ways to bridge sexual union with a greater source of wisdom and clarity. With its wealth of rituals and visualizations developed specifically for Western students and lovers, The Art of Sexual Magic is a life-changing work that is sure to enliven your intimate hours. 1. In 1202, a 32-year-old Italian finished one of the most influential books of all time, which introduced modern arithmetic to Western Europe. Devised in India in the 7th and 8th centuries and brought to North Africa by Muslim traders, the Hindu-Arabic system helped transform the West into the dominant force in science, technology, and commerce, leaving behind Muslim cultures which had long known it but had failed to see its potential. The young Italian, Leonardo of Pisa (better known today as Fibonacci), had learned the Hindu number system when he traveled to North Africa with his father, a customs agent. The book he created was Liber abbaci, the ´´Book of Calculation´´, and the revolution that followed its publication was enormous. Arithmetic made it possible for ordinary people to buy and sell goods, convert currencies, and keep accurate records of possessions more readily than ever before. Liber abbaci´s publication led directly to large-scale international commerce and the scientific revolution of the Renaissance. Yet despite the ubiquity of his discoveries, Leonardo of Pisa remains an enigma. His name is best known today in association with an exercise in Liber abbaci whose solution gives rise to a sequence of numbers - the Fibonacci sequence - used by some to predict the rise and fall of financial markets, and evident in myriad biological structures. One of the great math popularizers of our time, Keith Devlin recreates the life and enduring legacy of an overlooked genius, and in the process makes clear how central numbers and mathematics are to our daily lives. 1. This book is pragmatical, not philosophical; a practical manual, not a treatise upon theories. It is intended for the men and women whose most pressing need is for money; who wish to get rich first, and philosophize afterward. It is for those who have, so far, found neither the time, the means, nor the opportunity to go deeply into the study of metaphysics, but who want results and who are willing to take the conclusions of science as a basis for action, without going into all the processes by which those conclusions were reached. It is expected that the listener will take the fundamental statements upon faith, just as he would take statements concerning a law of electrical action if they were promulgated by a Marconi or an Edison; and, taking the statements upon faith, that he will prove their truth by acting upon them without fear or hesitation. Every man or woman who does this will certainly get rich; for the science herein applied is an exact science, and failure is impossible. For the benefit, however, of those who wish to investigate philosophical theories and so secure a logical basis for faith, I will here cite certain authorities: The monistic theory of the universe; the theory that One is All, and that All is One; that one Substance manifests itself as the seeming many elements of the material world - is of Hindu origin, and has been gradually winning its way into the thought of the western world for 200 years. It is the foundation of all the Oriental philosophies, and of those of Descartes, Spinoza, Leibnitz, Schopenhauer, Hegel, and Emerson. The reader who would dig to the philosophical foundations of this is advised to read Hegel and Emerson for himself. In writing this book I have sacrificed all other considerations to plainness and simplicity of style, so that all might understand. The plan of action laid down therein was deduced from the conclusions of philosophy; it has been thoroughly tested, and bears the supreme t... 1. Language: English. Narrator: Jason McCoy.
